What are Film Testing Equipments?

Plastic film testing is the systematic laboratory measurement of thin polymer film properties — typically films between 10 microns and 250 microns in thickness — to verify that a finished film meets the specification it was designed and procured against. Different from rigid plastic testing or pipe testing, film testing focuses on the unique failure modes that affect thin-gauge polymer materials in flexible packaging, lamination and adhesive-tape applications: drop and puncture impact, slip characteristics during high-speed converting and packaging, heat-seal integrity, peel adhesion of multilayer structures, gauge consistency across the web width, and optical performance for product display.

Quality testing of plastic film is increasingly mandatory across all major film applications. FMCG, food, dairy, pharmaceutical and personal-care customers all require batch-by-batch QC test reports along with the dispatch documentation. Without these reports, payment and project clearance are delayed. Government and BIS audits expect to see in-house testing capability covering all the key film property tests specified in the applicable Indian Standards. Routine in-house testing in your QC lab is the only economical way to maintain customer relationships and certification.

Film Types We Test (Mono-Layer to 7-Layer, Laminates, Foils)

Our film testing equipment supports the full range of plastic film structures used in modern flexible packaging:

  • Monolayer Films (Single-Layer Polymer Films)

Single-polymer films extruded from one resin grade — LDPE, LLDPE, HDPE, PP, BOPP, BOPET, PVC. Used for general-purpose packaging, shrink wrap, stretch wrap, lamination base films and adhesive tape backing. Tested for tensile, elongation, dart impact, COF, opacity, GSM, MFI of raw resin.

  • Multilayer Co-Extruded Films (3-Layer, 5-Layer, 7-Layer)

Co-extruded films with multiple polymer layers extruded simultaneously to combine properties — typically a barrier layer (EVOH, PA, PVDC) between sealant and outer protective layers. Used for high-barrier food packaging, medical packaging, oxygen-sensitive applications. Tested for tensile through the multilayer structure, dart impact, heat-seal strength of sealant layer, COF for converting performance.

  • Laminated Films (PET-PE, PET-MET-PE, PET-Foil-PE)

Multi-substrate laminated structures where two or more films are bonded together via adhesive or extrusion lamination — typically an outer printable layer (PET, BOPP), a barrier layer (aluminium foil or metallised film) and a sealant layer (LDPE, LLDPE, PE). The dominant flexible packaging structure for high-value retail packaging. Tested for tensile, dart impact, COF, peel adhesion between layers, heat-seal strength.

  • Aluminium Foil & Metallised Films.

Pure aluminium foil (typically 7-50 microns) or metallised plastic films (PET, BOPP, BOPP with vacuum-deposited aluminium layer). Used as barrier layers in pharmaceutical blister packaging, snack food packaging, and dairy lamitubes. Tested for tensile (the foil dominates), pinhole detection, GSM consistency.

  • Shrink Wrap & Stretch Wrap Films.

Specialised films designed for pallet wrapping, secondary packaging and bundle wrapping — typically LDPE, LLDPE, EVA or blended polymer. Tested for tensile, dart impact (critical for survival in handling), shrinkage (hot-air oven), elongation under load, and tear resistance.

  • Adhesive Tapes

Pressure-sensitive adhesive tapes — paper-backed, plastic-backed (BOPP, PVC, PET) or foil-backed. Tested for peel adhesion (Digital Peel Tester per ASTM D 3330), tensile strength of backing, and adhesive consistency.

  • Retort Pouches, Stand-Up Pouches & Lidding Films

High-value flexible packaging for processed food, pharmaceutical and personal care. Multilayer laminate structures with stringent QC requirements for seal strength (heat-seal + peel testing), barrier performance, drop survival (dart impact) and visual quality (opacity).

  • Paper, Paperboard & Paper-Plastic Laminates

Paper-based packaging substrates and paper-plastic laminate structures used in food, dairy and aseptic packaging. Tested for GSM, tensile strength, COF (inclined plane method per TAPPI T-815), and seal strength.

Categories of Film Testing Instruments

Film testing instruments fall into seven broad categories based on the property they measure. Most flexible packaging QC labs need at least one instrument from each category — typically 8 to 12 total instruments for a complete film QC capability:

  • Mechanical Property Tests (Tensile, Elongation)

Tensile strength at break, elongation at break, modulus, and yield stress of plastic film, laminate, and paper substrates. Tested as per ASTM D 882 (the primary plastic-film tensile standard) on a Tensile Testing Machine (UTM). Film tensile testing requires lower-load and higher-elongation capability compared to rigid plastic testing.

  • Impact Property Tests (Dart Impact)

Dart impact failure weight of plastic film determined by the free-falling dart method as per ASTM D 1709 and IS 2508. Conducted using a Dart Impact Tester. Essential for evaluating shrink wrap, stretch wrap, pallet wrap, and films exposed to drops and rough handling.

  • Friction Tests (Static & Kinetic COF)

Coefficient of friction (COF) of film against itself or a metal surface, measured for both static and kinetic friction as per ASTM D 1894 or TAPPI T-815. Tested using a COF Tester. Helps determine film performance on high-speed converting and packaging lines.

  • Heat-Seal & Peel Tests

Heat-seal strength of sealant film layers measured on a Digital Peel Tester after sealing specimens on a Heat Sealer, in accordance with ASTM F 88. Peel adhesion of pressure-sensitive tapes is tested per ASTM D 3330, while bond strength between laminated film layers is evaluated as per IS 7016. The Heat Sealer and Peel Tester combination forms the core seal-strength testing workflow for flexible packaging quality control.

  • Optical Property Tests (Opacity / Light Transmission)

Light transmission and opacity of plastic films measured according to IS 12235 (Part 3) using a Digital Opacity Tester. Critical for packaging applications involving light-sensitive products such as pharmaceuticals, dairy products, and UV-sensitive foods.

  • Gauge & Weight Tests (GSM)

Grams per square metre (GSM) of plastic film, paper, foil, laminate, and corrugated samples measured using a Digital GSM Balance. A fundamental test for verifying gauge consistency across the web width in flexible packaging production.

  • Raw Material & Thermal Tests

Melt Flow Index (MFI) of polymer granules tested as per ASTM D 1238 / ISO 1133 to assess raw material suitability before extrusion. Film shrinkage testing is conducted as per ASTM D 2732 using a Hot Air Oven, which is also used for sample conditioning prior to testing.

Categories of Film Testing Instruments We Manufacture

Film testing instruments fall into seven broad categories based on the property they measure. Most flexible packaging QC labs need at least one instrument from each category — typically 8 to 12 total instruments for a complete film QC capability :
  • Mechanical Property Tests (Tensile, Elongation)

Tensile strength at break, elongation at break, modulus and yield stress of plastic film, laminate and paper substrates. Tested per ASTM D 882 (the primary plastic-film tensile standard) on the Tensile Testing Machine or UTM — note that film tensile testing requires lower-load and higher-elongation capability than rigid plastic testing.

  • Impact Property Tests (Dart Impact)

Dart impact failure weight of plastic film by the free-falling-dart method per ASTM D 1709 (the central plastic-film impact standard) and IS 2508. Tested on the Dart Impact Tester. Critical for shrink wrap, stretch wrap, pallet wrap and any film that must survive drops and rough handling.

  • Friction Tests (Static & Kinetic COF)

Coefficient of friction (slip) of film against itself or against metal surface — measured static and kinetic per ASTM D 1894 (the horizontal-plane method for plastic film) or TAPPI T-815 (the inclined-plane method for paper and corrugated board). Tested on the COF Tester. Determines high-speed converting and packaging-line behaviour.

  • Heat-Seal & Peel Tests

Heat-seal strength of sealant film layer measured on the Digital Peel Tester after specimens are sealed on the Heat Sealer per ASTM F 88. Peel adhesion of pressure-sensitive tapes per ASTM D 3330. Peel adhesion between laminated film layers (bond strength) per IS 7016. The matched Heat Sealer + Peel Tester pair is the foundation seal-strength workflow for flexible packaging QC.

  • Optical Property Tests (Opacity / Light Transmission)

Light transmission and opacity of plastic film per IS 12235 (Part 3) — direct % opaque readout on the Digital Opacity Tester. Critical for light-sensitive packaging (dairy lamitubes, pharmaceutical blister, UV-sensitive food) where the film must block specific wavelengths.

  • Gauge & Weight Tests (GSM)

Grams per square metre (GSM) of plastic film, paper, foil, laminate and corrugated samples measured on the Digital GSM Balance. Fundamental gauge-consistency check across the web width for any flexible packaging converter.

  • Raw Material & Thermal Tests

Melt Flow Index of raw polymer granules per ASTM D 1238 / ISO 1133 — the gatekeeper test before extrusion. Shrinkage testing of film per ASTM D 2732 on the Hot Air Oven. Sample conditioning before testing on the Hot Air Oven.

Frequently Asked Questions

For a starter plastic film QC lab, the typical minimum instrument suite includes: (1) Tensile Testing Machine for ASTM D 882 tensile and elongation testing, (2) Dart Impact Tester for ASTM D 1709 impact resistance, (3) COF Tester for ASTM D 1894 slip testing, (4) Digital GSM Balance for basis weight and gauge consistency, (5) Melt Flow Index Tester for incoming resin quality control, and (6) Hydraulic Press with ASTM D 882 strip die for sample preparation. These six instruments provide the core testing capability required by most flexible packaging manufacturers. Additional instruments such as Heat Sealer with Peel Tester, Hot Air Oven and Opacity Tester can be added depending on the film application.
Yes. We supply complete film QC laboratories as a single integrated package based on your film type and testing requirements. The package includes the required instruments, factory calibration certificates, one commissioning visit, comprehensive operator training, and optional Annual Maintenance Contract (AMC). Package pricing is considerably more economical than purchasing each instrument separately.
Flexible packaging laminate quality control typically requires a Tensile Testing Machine, Dart Impact Tester, COF Tester, Heat Sealer, Digital Peel Tester, Digital GSM Balance, Digital Opacity Tester, Hot Air Oven, Melt Flow Index Tester, and Hydraulic Press for sample preparation. This combination supports testing of PET-PE, PET-MET-PE, aluminium foil laminates and similar packaging materials in accordance with industry standards.
ASTM D 1709 specifies two dart configurations for different film thickness ranges. Method A uses a 38.10 mm hemispherical dart dropped from 660 mm for thinner films, while Method B uses a 50.80 mm dart dropped from 1500 mm for thicker films requiring higher impact energy. Our Dart Impact Tester includes both darts as standard, allowing one instrument to perform both Method A and Method B testing.
ASTM D 1894 measures the coefficient of friction for plastic films, foils and laminates using a horizontal-plane method, providing both static and kinetic COF values. TAPPI T-815 uses an inclined-plane method and is intended for paper, corrugated board and fibreboard, measuring the angle at which sliding begins. Our COF Tester supports both ASTM D 1894 and TAPPI T-815, making it suitable for manufacturers handling both plastic and paper-based packaging materials.
The Heat Sealer and Peel Tester work together for ASTM F 88 seal-strength testing. The Heat Sealer produces consistent laboratory seals using controlled temperature, pressure and dwell time, while the Peel Tester measures the seal strength by recording the force required to separate the sealed films. Together they provide a complete seal-strength testing workflow for flexible packaging quality control.
Many testing instruments, including Tensile Testing Machines, Melt Flow Index Testers, Universal Testing Machines, Hydraulic Presses, GSM Balances and Hot Air Ovens, are used for both film and plastic testing. Our Film Testing category focuses on flexible packaging, laminates and BOPP/BOPET applications, while the Plastic Testing category is intended for pipes, sheets, moulded products, containers and engineering plastics. Both categories share many common testing solutions.
Yes. We provide free online installation, operator training and factory calibration certificates for customers purchasing multiple instruments. Training covers ASTM D 1709 dart impact testing, ASTM D 882 tensile testing, ASTM D 1894 coefficient of friction testing, ASTM F 88 seal-strength testing and other applicable methods. We also offer Annual Maintenance Contracts (AMC), calibration services and long-term technical support across India.
