Carbon Black Dispersion Test Apparatus — HDPE Pipe Dispersion Tester Manufacturer in India

About Carbon Black Dispersion

As per IS 4984 and IS 4985.

International Equipments is a leading manufacturer, supplier and exporter of Carbon Black Dispersion Test Apparatus in India. Built at our Mumbai facility, our Carbon Black Dispersion Tester is a precision microscope-based instrument that grades the dispersion quality - the uniformity of carbon black distribution - in HDPE pipe, PE gas pipe and PLB duct compounds, strictly as per IS 4984, IS 4985 and the related ISO 18553 international standard.

Carbon black dispersion is the natural companion test to Carbon Black Content. While the Content Apparatus measures HOW MUCH carbon black is in the polymer, the Dispersion Tester measures HOW WELL DISTRIBUTED it is throughout the polymer matrix. Even with the correct 2.0-2.5% loading, poorly-dispersed carbon black forms visible agglomerates that act as stress concentration points in the pipe wall - causing premature brittle failure in service. Both tests are mandatory under IS 4984, IS 4985 and the DOT specification for HDPE PLB duct, and most HDPE pipe QC laboratories purchase the matched pair from a single supplier.

What is Carbon Black Dispersion Testing?

Carbon Black Dispersion Testing is a microstructural quality test that evaluates how uniformly the carbon black pigment is distributed throughout the polyethylene matrix of HDPE pipe material. A thin sample of the polymer is prepared on a hot plate (which softens the polymer to a controlled film thickness), then examined under a calibrated microscope. The operator counts and sizes the visible carbon black agglomerates - undispersed clumps of carbon black that have not been broken down to the individual particle level during compounding. The dispersion is then graded against reference images on a 1-to-6 grade scale per ISO 18553.

Good dispersion means the carbon black is broken down to its fundamental particle size (typically 20-50 nanometres) and uniformly distributed throughout the polymer - invisible to the naked eye, appearing as a uniform black mass under the microscope. Poor dispersion means the carbon black is still present as larger agglomerates - each agglomerate is a stress concentration point that fails earlier than the surrounding polymer matrix.

About Our Carbon Black Dispersion Test Apparatus

Our Carbon Black Dispersion Test Apparatus integrates two essential components into a single bench-top unit: (1) an 8 inch diameter hot plate for sample preparation, with controlled temperature from ambient to 200°C; and (2) a calibrated microscope with 6 inch diameter viewing screen at two magnifications - 100X for general dispersion grading and 450X for higher-resolution evaluation of fine agglomerates.

The hot plate is the sample-preparation stage. A small pellet or strip of HDPE compound is placed between two glass slides on the hot plate; the heat softens the polymer to a precise thickness (typically around 20-100 microns) suitable for transmitted-light microscope examination. Temperature up to 200°C comfortably covers all the common polyethylene grades used in HDPE pipe (melting around 130°C) and higher-melting grades used for PLB telecom duct.

The microscope side has a 6-inch screen that gives a clear, magnified view of the prepared sample - large enough for the operator to count and grade dispersed carbon black agglomerates against the ISO 18553 reference standard images. Robust M.S. construction with powder-coated finish, standard 230 V / 50 Hz single-phase operation - built for daily QC use in busy HDPE pipe manufacturing plants.

Why Dispersion Testing is Required

  • Correct Percentage ≠ Correct Performance
A pipe sample with 2.2% carbon black (within IS 4984 specification) will STILL fail in service if that carbon black is poorly dispersed.
  • Agglomerates Are Crack Initiation Points
Agglomerates above ~60 microns act like internal flaws, concentrating stress and initiating fatigue cracks under hydrostatic pressure.
  • Mandatory for ISI Mark Certification
IS 4984, IS 4985, IS 14333, IS 14930 and the DOT specification all require BOTH carbon black content AND dispersion testing.
  • Catches Master-Batch Compounder Errors
Dispersion problems from wrong let-down ratio, extruder mismatch, incompatible carrier or short residence time are caught batch-by-batch.
  • Required for DOT PLB Duct Specification
DOT specifications for HDPE PLB duct explicitly require carbon black dispersion grade per ISO 18553, typically Grade 3 or better.

How the Dispersion Test is Performed

  • Step 1 - Sample Preparation on the Hot Plate
Cut a thin pellet or strip, place between two glass slides on the 8-inch hot plate, heat to approx 160-170°C until uniformly soft, press to a thin film and cool.
  • Step 2 - Microscope Examination at 100X
Place the prepared slide on the stage and examine at 100X - the standard magnification for routine ISO 18553 grading.
  • Step 3 - Count and Size the Agglomerates
Identify visible agglomerates, estimate sizes, and switch to 450X for detailed examination of borderline cases if needed.
  • Step 4 - Grade the Dispersion Against Reference Images
Compare against ISO 18553 reference images (Grade 1 = best, Grade 6 = worst) and record the assigned grade in QC documentation.

Dispersion Grade Scale Per ISO 18553 (Grade 1 to 6)

  • Grade 1 - Excellent
Very fine, uniform dispersion. No visible agglomerates above the threshold size.
  • Grade 2 - Very Good
Small number of small agglomerates visible. Acceptable for high-pressure water mains and gas pipes.
  • Grade 3 - Good (Typical Acceptance Threshold)
Moderate dispersion with some small-to-medium agglomerates - the minimum acceptable grade for most HDPE water pipe specifications under IS 4984.
  • Grade 4 - Marginal
Larger agglomerates clearly visible - a warning sign that the compounding process needs adjustment.
  • Grade 5 - Poor
Many large agglomerates above the threshold size. Generally fails IS 4984 / IS 4985 / DOT specifications.
  • Grade 6 - Very Poor
Severe agglomeration. Almost certain to cause premature brittle failure. Material should be returned to compounder.

Carbon Black Content vs Dispersion - Both Tests are Required

  • Carbon Black Content (Separate Product) - Tells You HOW MUCH
Measures carbon black percentage by pyrolysis (ASTM D 1603). See Carbon Black Content Apparatus.
  • Carbon Black Dispersion (This Product) - Tells You HOW WELL DISTRIBUTED
Evaluates uniformity of distribution using microscope examination. ISO 18553 grades on a 1-6 scale.
  • Why BOTH Tests Are Mandatory
Together, the two tests catch ALL carbon-black-related quality problems. We strongly recommend buying both instruments as a matched pair.

FAQs

Because percentage and dispersion are independent quality variables. A pipe sample can have exactly the correct 2.2% carbon black content (passing the content test) while still having terrible dispersion - large undispersed agglomerates that act as stress concentration points and cause premature brittle failure under hydrostatic pressure. This is why IS 4984, IS 4985, IS 14930 and the DOT PLB duct specification all require BOTH tests.
Most HDPE water pipe specifications under IS 4984 require Grade 3 or better on the ISO 18553 1-6 scale (1 = best, 6 = worst). High-performance applications - high-pressure water mains, gas distribution pipes, large-diameter pipes - typically require Grade 2 or better. DOT PLB duct specifications typically require Grade 3 or better.
The hot plate is essential because it produces the controlled thin-film sample required for transmitted-light microscope examination. The polymer needs to be melted to a specific thickness (typically 20-100 microns) so light can pass through and embedded agglomerates can be clearly seen against the polymer matrix.
100X is the standard magnification specified by ISO 18553 for routine dispersion grading. 450X is the higher-resolution magnification used when borderline samples need detailed examination - for example, when dispersion appears between Grade 3 and Grade 4 at 100X.
Yes - the ISO 18553 dispersion test method applies equally to HDPE water pipes, HDPE sewerage pipes, HDPE PLB telecom ducts and PE gas pipes. The same sample preparation, the same 100X magnification, the same reference grading images.
Yes, in principle the same microscope examination method works for any pigment dispersion in a polymer - coloured master-batches in PP, PE or PVC compounds. Please discuss your specific pigment application during the enquiry stage.
ISO 18553 reference images are typically supplied by the standards-issuing body (ISO, BIS) rather than the test equipment manufacturer, because the images are copyright-protected. Please discuss reference availability during the enquiry stage - we can suggest options.
Yes. We provide free on-line installation, commissioning, operator training on the ISO 18553 dispersion grading methodology and factory calibration certificates for the hot plate temperature controller and microscope magnification.
